All things with wings.

Updated: Dec 20, 2018

Our Ranch is blessed with so many kinds of birds and other flying creatures.

How many kinds of birds will we end up seeing on our trips to the Double B?

There have been plenty of birds BIG and small and I have yet to get my own pictures of them so for now borrowed will just have to do.

This spring we saw a Mountain Blue Bird here and there maybe totaling 6 or so but on our last trip we were surrounded in this bright almost electric blue color. There were so many and so fun to watch. Did you know that they will hover above ground waiting for their dinner to appear?

We were first introduced to the Nighthawk or the Bull Bat as they are also known this last spring. One evening sitting by the fire as the sun had just gone down below the mountain range to the West we started hearing this wuuu wuuu wuuu wuuu, it was a sound that neither of us had heard before. Being a smarty pants I said it is a Night Fury being from the movie How to train your Dragon. I kept waiting for the flash of fire to hit next to us. It was loud and it was fast, there was I'm sure several of them but it was so neat and a little scary. The next day we had stopped at the previous owners and told them of our experience and that is when we were informed that they were Nighthawks/Bull Bats. We have not been able to actually see one but we are hopeful.

Oh the Ravens. The property is currently free range for about 150 or so head of cattle, mostly mamas with their babies and a bull or two tossed into the mix so we have an abundance of cow patties. Might I mention that these patties are the biggest i have ever seen. We had both noticed that these patties were uprooted (for a lack of better words) all over the place and couldn't figure out what was going on. One day we had watched over 30 ravens land north of the Homestead behind a grove of trees and were able to sneak up on them. Low and behold those buggers were tearing up all those giant semi-dried patties, looking for bugs I guess. EWWW factor of about 100.

Lady bugs, grasshoppers, mosquitoes and bats OH MY!

Lady Bugs Such cute pretty little insects. A favorite of many including mine, they are fun watch and they are great for the garden. I don't know how many kinds of lady Bugs there are where we will be but I'm hoping for many. They always seem to land wherever they like, they have no cares or concerns and seem to be enjoying what the day has brought them.

Montana bats Not so sure that most will find these little creepy things so cute or adorable, probably just the opposite. They are necessary for us humans to have a greater chance of surviving a warm summer night next to a meandering creek or sitting next to a roaring fire. They eat mosquitoes and we have lots of them I assure you. But isn't this little guy just a tiny bit cute I mean look at those EARS!!
